Image Licensing Information
Image licensing is perhaps the most important, yet least exciting part of any project. If you don’t have a large budget and simply cannot afford an outright purchase of an illustration, more often than not, you can still get what you want without breaking the bank in the process. This is where the flexibility of image licensing comes into play. There are a wide range of options available to help match our services with your image needs and your budget. When you request a written estimate, you can also request to see the cost of different licensing options. The bottom line is, we want you to be happy with our images, and we only want you to pay for what you need. The following options are ranked from the typically least expensive image licensing rights to the most expensive image licensing rights. These options are not written in stone, but simply provided as a guide so you can gauge your illustration needs against your budget.
One Time Digital Rights
This license is a limited grant of rights which allows the purchaser the limited right to use an illustration for one specific digital purpose, either on a website, an app, eBook or in a PowerPoint presentation. This license may have a time limit placed on it depending on the application.
One Time Print Rights
This license is a limited grant of rights which allows the purchaser the limited right to reproduce an illustration one time in printed form. There may be a geographical limit placed on the distribution of the printed materials, the total number of copies that can be produced or the period of time that the image can be reproduced.
One Time Print Rights, Plus Digital
This license is a limited grant of rights which allows the purchaser the limited right to reproduce an illustration one time in printed form along with digital use rights to accompany and or support the original printed edition (such as an e-Book, e-Zine or webzine). There may be a geographical limit placed on the distribution of the printed materials, the total number of copies that can be produced or the period of time that the image can be reproduced.
Unlimited Nonexclusive Rights
This license is an unlimited grant of rights which allows the purchaser to use an illustration across all media types – both print and digital. The nonexclusive grant does not prevent the illustrator from granting the same rights to other purchasers. These rights can be very broad or have specific limitations placed on geography or time period.
Unlimited Exclusive Rights
This license is an unlimited grant of rights which allows the purchaser to use an illustration across all media types – both print and digital. The exclusive grant restricts the artwork to be used only by one buyer. The exclusive grant typically is limited to a certain time period, which can be extended when it expires or it can then be licensed as a nonexclusive image.
Outright Purchase of Artwork and Copyright
Certain clients or situations require an image to be purchased outright. This is an option, but it carries a correspondingly steep price tag.
